Nanoparticle research in Delft, The Netherlands

Anyone who works with nanoparticles on a daily basis knows how challenging this can be. Nanoparticles are used in many different products to improve their function or substance. But not all nanoparticles can be used in all cases. Nanoparticles vary in size from 1 to 100 nanometres. So first of all the exact size of the particles has to be determined. This is one of the things we do at Solids Solutions in Delft. In our laboratory we have several instruments and techniques at our disposal to perform nanoparticle research.

BET surface analysis of nanoparticles

One method to obtain information about the properties of nanoparticles is to perform a BET surface analysis. To perform a BET surface analysis of nanoparticles an inert gas is used that is adsorbed onto the surface of a solid. In most cases, nitrogen is best suited for this, but sometimes it is desirable to use argon or carbon dioxide. With nitrogen, not only the specific surface can be determined, but also the pore volume and the pore size distribution. Solids Solutions uses different techniques to analyse the obtained information.

Calculating particle size of powders

Solids Solutions specialises in particle and powder technology. In order to determine the particle size of a powder, we use laser diffraction, among other things. The powder is scattered in a specific medium, after which it is illuminated by a laser beam. In this way, a scattering pattern can be discovered which can be used to calculate the size of the powder particles.
